Deja Vu They say that pitching makes up 75% of winning ballgames. For the Antipolo City ACG, nothing can be much closer to the truth. On Saturday, Antipolo City (8-0) became the first team to shutout an opponent this season, behind another six hitless innings from ace Mel Palacol in cruising to a 13-0 win over the Taguig Gems. The lefthander, who hurled six-hitless innings on Opening Day and 9 1/3 hitless innings to start the season, was at it again. This time he struck out eight and walked three while retiring the last 15 batters to lower his league-leading earned run average to 1.07. Jospeh Orillana relieved Palacol in the seventh to complete the shutout. Rufino Palacol Jr had a pair of doubles and a triple while driving in three runs to pace the ACG offense. Taguig (3-3) meanwhile continued to play catch up with the league in splitting yet their third successive doubleheader the following day. After being nosed out 7-6 by Diliman (6-3), the Gems won the trailer against Alabang (4-6) by default, setting the stage for an interesting play-off run between the two teams. On Saturday, Mike Gabriel's three-run triple highlighted a six-run second inning and the Gems took advantage of five Makati miscues for a 9-5 victory, sending the Titans to their eighth consecutive defeat in the process. Playing in rain-soaked weather, Alabang got a pair of rbi-triples from Jobie Rabat enroute to a 15-9 win againt Loyola Heights (2-6). The Titans' season series sweep of the Blue Eagles gave them the tie-breaker edge for the fourth play-off spot between the teams. |
