Dog Days Of Summer

Pitching was worn thin over the weekend as teams combined to score more than 26 runs a game while making some noise in the standings.

Firstbaseman Em Fernandez drove in seven runs over the weekend as Loyola Heights (2-5) entered the win column. On Saturday, the Blue Eagles jumped to a quick 10-0 lead against Makati then held off a stubborn Titans rally before pulling out a 12-8 win. Stephano Baltao's walk-off single on Sunday against the Taguig Gems gave Loyola Heights a sweep of their weekend set.

Diliman's Fighting Maroons blew a 6-2 fifth inning lead to top-ranked Antipolo City on Saturday enroute to a 15-8 setback. The ACG, who trailed this late in the game for the first time this season, got five homeruns, including Joseph Orillana's league-leading fourth homer, in their come from behind win.

Despite Saturday's 20-15 loss to the Alabang Titans, Marikina (5-2) moved into second place on Sunday by humiliating Diliman (5-3) 23-5 behind a pair of grand slams from Sky Rosales and Arjay Santos. The Golden Bears surged past Antipolo City as the league's top-scoring team in the process.

Nevertheless, the Antipolo City ACG (7-0) remained the league's top-ranked team even after hammering Makati (0-7) 19-4 on Sunday behind the combined six-hit pitching from Joseph Orillana and Mel Palacol.

Meanwhile, the Taguig Gems (1-1) broke open a one-run game with eight runs in their last at bat to pull out a 21-15 victory against Alabang (3-5) and make their mark on the league after a heartbreaking opening loss.

That kept Makati the lone winless team in the league thus far.
