Antipolo City Steamrolling It's quite early to tell but the Antipolo City ACG have already surpassed expectations in the 2003 Titans League, winning their first three games in dominant fashion. On Sunday, seven players had at least two hits in an 18-5 thrashing of the Alabang Titans (2-2). The ACG have totally outplayed the competition thus far, outscoring them 45-9. Their 1.96 team earned run average and .456 team batting average are tops in the league. When your lead-off man, Mark Olayvar, goes a league-high 11 for 16 with a 1.250 slugging percentage to boot, and a workhorse pitcher, Mel Palacol, flashes a 0.75 ERA while being almost unhittable from the get-go, then things are certainly looking up for Antipolo City. At the other end of the spectrum, the Makati Titans (0-3) and Loyola Heights Blue Eagles (0-3) have yet to cherish victory. For the latter, it was a heartbreaking 8-7 defeat at the hands of Alabang despite a pair of two-run homers from Em Fernandez and Edmund Esguerra on Saturday. A game-ending outfield relay nailed the possible tying run at the plate. On Sunday, they trailed Marikina 4-3 in the fourth before the game was rained out. It will be replayed in its entirety later in the season. As for Makati, their pourous defense cost them any chance of winning against the Diliman Fighting Maroons (3-1), succumbing 17-8 behind a league-high 11 errors. Meanwhile, Marikina's Golden Bears (2-1) got solid pitching from Arjay Santos and Arvin Cirunay, then shook off a late Diliman rally enroute to a 9-6 win on Saturday. |
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES / WEEKEND 2
GOPHERS AWAY There were eight homeruns hit last weekend... After giving up a homerun to the last batter he faced two weekends ago, Makati's Migs Zuluaga gave up another gopher to the first batter he faced on Sunday...Later, Alabang's Jobie Rabat and Anton Lorayes belted back-to-back taters off Antipolo City's Jayson Teodoro in a losing cause. HE'S HUMAN TOO Antipolo City's Mel Palacol yielded his first hit of the season while pitching in relief against Alabang on Sunday. The lefthander had thrown 9 1/3 consecutive hitless innings until giving up a fourth inning single to Leslie Suntay. A WALK IS AS GOOD AS A HIT Diliman's Darwin DelaCalzada tied a national record by drawing a free pass four times during Sunday's game against Makati. SLOWING DOWN THE RAMPAGE There were 32 stolen bases last weekend compared to 70 thefts on Opening Weekend. HEY THAT HURTS Alabang's Leslie Suntay has been hit by a pitch four times this season, including at least once in each of the last three games. Notwithstanding, Suntay has been beaned a total of eleven times wearing a Titans uniform, tops among all players. |
