  Play Hardball!
Hope springs eternal. Such is the sentiment among both league organizers and its seven charter members when the Titans League takes the field for the first time in the nation.

In its maiden season, the league showcases a spectrum of aged veterans, recreational players and aspiring talent out to play competitive baseball in a recreational yet professionally run environment.

With competitive parity underscoring the league, everyone is a contender. The elements necessary for two and a half months of drama on the diamond are present in each team's mold and character.

All-Filipino caliber players dot the rosters of each team. 50 year-olds and teenagers, as well as women and novices have a league all their own to experience the camaraderie and bring out the competitive spirit that defines sport.

Which team wins the coveted Titans League title will depend on team chemistry more than talent. We take a look at each team's keys to success.

ALABANG

Nesty Leyson can be counted upon at both ends of the battery.

Many of the concerns revolving around Alabang depends on who shows up for gameday. This team may be the league's sleeper.

Defense is respectable but lacks some depth and possibly endurance.

Top of the order may be the league's envy wih Jon De Ubago, Ericsson Bellosa, and/or Bai Dela Cerna. No power shortage here either. Leslie Suntay anchors a solid middle of the line-up.

Pitching will depend heavily on the duo of Joey Carillo and Nesty Leyson, but both are known workhorses.

  ANTIPOLO CITY

Joseph Orillana brings a winnng tradition to the hills of Antipolo.

Defense must hold up especially in late innnings given the team's lack of depth.

Joseph Orillana and the Palacol brothers will be the core of the offense, but someone else needs to step up.

Pitching hinges on the duo of Orillana and Mel Palacol. Playing coach Rafael Palacol, Sr. will have to play out his strategy carefully.

  DILIMAN

2002 Titans Series MVP Rajah Singh leads a team of raw talent.

Solid defensively throughout and with great range, but must avoid lapses.

Robert Duliesco can dominate games single-handedly but must regain his stroke at the plate and consistency in the strike zone. Rajah Singh provides the intangibles to make this team realize its potential. Team speed is definitely an asset and they shouldn't have trouble getting on base to boot.

Pitching can be the league's most feared with Duliesco, Darwin Dela Calzada, Nino Tator, Jayson Santiago, and Maynard Ocampo.

  LOYOLA HEIGHTS

Firstbaseman Em Fernandez anchors the Loyola infield.

Solid up the middle defensively with SS Paolo Padla, 2B JR Torio, either Santi Ledesma or Chad Garcia in CF, and playing coach Alex Estipular behind the plate.

Offense got a much needed boost with the additions of Jun Veloso, Edmund Esguerra, Garcia, and Ledesma, but will need to be consistent.

Pitching might be a problem depending on who can finish games. Joe Quiogue continues to improve but should get adequate back-up from Ledesma, Veloso, and Garcia.

  MAKATI

Migs Zuluaga should be more than adequate behind the plate.

Defense may be suspect so team chemistry is a must.

Good mix of lefthanded hitters. Should not have problem scoring runs with a middle of the order that's as good as any. Needs to get runners on base though. Bottom of the order will have to move runners along.

Herbert Salvador is the workhorse, while Bacchus Ledesma can close out games. Beyond that the pitching is questionable.

  MARIKINA

Sonny Pensaber is part of Marikina's pitching depth.

Excellent mix of veterans and youth will need to shore up defensively and be patient.

Offense is one of the league's best and can slug it out with the opposition.

Pitching will be the league's envy with a rotation that goes four deep in Sonny Pensaber, Arjay Santos, Sky Rosales, and Arvin Cirunay.

  TAGUIG

The Gems have a proven gamer in thirdbaseman Mike Gabriel.

Won't be playing its first game until the middle of May, and will have to make-up games with double-headers. Endurance will be a factor. With the team's core comprised of fast-pitch softball players, how smooth a transition to the baseball diamond could determine how far this team goes.

The offense will be anchored by former Blu Boy slugger Dennis Daep and UST Tiger gem Gil Encarnado. The buzz around town is that Mayor Freddie Tinga himself will step up to the plate.

Five possible hurlers in Darvin Reyes, Ervic Vijandre, Guerrero, Encarnado, and Gabriel gives the team depth but neither is likely to dominate on the mound.
