Olympians Halt Mets' Streak As Division Battles Begin

Marikina-Calumpang's Rodolfo Cruz (right) runs into Korea's Tommy Song for an easy out at homeplate. The Stars won the game nonetheless, 13-7.

Alabang-Makati's Jessie Daquigan may not have eye-catching stuff on the hill, but the right-hander sure is a competitor. Last Sunday, Daquigan weaved himself out of a two-on, one-out jam in Manila's last at-bat and the Olympians held on for an 11-10 win to end the Mets' five-game winning streak as the 2006 Titans League began divisional play.

After holding the hot-hitting Mets to just four hits through the first seven innings, Daquigan practically ran out of gas in going the distance. Staked to an 11-6 lead heading into the last frame, the right-hander found his team on the ropes after giving up a single and one out later surrendering run-producing extra-base hits to Antonio Brias, Angelo Esguerra, Gian Jimenez, and CJ Concepcion. In between, Daquigan also hit a batter.

The Olympians defense meanwhile had committed six errors up to that point to almost negate the team's offensive output. But somehow, Daquigan and his teammates kept battling and the Manila threat was foiled with a pair of game-ending groundouts.

Alabang-Makati jumpstarted the scoring with three runs in the first inning on Jeff Rodriguez's rbi-double, Daquigan's rbi-single, and an rbi-groundout. Manila got one back in its half of the first, then tied it a couple innings later on an error and a Brias sac fly.

The Olympians regained the lead in the sixth on Jeff Embuido's sac fly and an rbi-single by Justin Austria. But Manila countered with three runs in the bottom half on Nico Uichico's rbi-double, a pair of errors, and Yugi Horibata's run-scoring single to take a one-run lead. But that would be short-lived as well.

Esguerra relieved a tiring Jimenez in the seventh and promptly surrendered the tying and go-ahead runs. Run-scoring singles by Anthony Los Banes, Ken Solon, and a pair of defensive miscues by Manila in the eighth inning stretched the Olympians lead to five and set the tone for the dramatic finish.

AIR FORCE 17, ATHLETICS 7
The defending champions had the country's top pitcher on the mound, but despite striking out a season-high 12 batters and issuing no walks, Ernesto Binarao was far from untouchable in giving up seven hits while his teammates turned in some sloppy fielding. Nevertheless, Pera Padala found enough offense for its left-handed ace as the Air Force rallied from deficits of 4-0 and 6-4 to defeat the Alabang Athletics in a National Division match-up.

Rommel Maniago launched his league-leading fourth homerun -- a two-run blast -- to tie the game in the second, and Ferdinand Recto connected for his first homerun of the season in Pera Padala's four-run fifth inning rally that gave the Air Force the lead for good. Pera Padala broke the game wide open with seven runs in the sixth off Athletics reliever Christian Galledo.

Galledo got some consolation with an inside-the-park homerun off Binarao in the seventh, his second round-tripper of the season.

AIR FORCE 9, OLYMPIANS 0

BLUE EAGLES 11, GOLDEN BEARS 9
Stefano Baltao went 4-for-4, drove home four runs, and scored three more with his first homerun of the season, a pair of doubles, and a single to lead the Loyola Heights-Ateneo Blue Eagles to an 11-9 win over Marikina-Marist in the Republic Division opener.

The Blue Eagles' Reinhart Bartolome gave up all nine runs on nine hits, five walks, and two hit batsmen while striking out six in a complete game effort. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate with his first homerun, drove home three runs and scored another three.

Arvin Cirunay connected for a three-run homerun and Sonny Pensaber had a two-run shot that wouldn't be enough in the Golden Bears' loss.

STARS 13, TITANS 7
Rodolfo Cruz scored twice and drove in three runs with a pair of run-scoring doubles and Arnold Sevilla went 3-for-4 with two rbi and two runs scored as Marikina-Marist scored early and in bunches in a 13-7 shelling of Titans Korea.

Glen Tuazon scattered seven hits, struck out six, and had just enough offense to work with in wrapping up his second complete game this season.

Cris Dela Cerna hit Korea's first homerun of the season in the second inning.
