Playing For A Cause
Stepping onto the hallowed grounds of Canlubang Baseball Stadium echoed
the glory days of the Canlubang Sugar Barons, traditionally recognized
as among the country's baseball elite.
So
when the Titans made their way to Canlubang last Sunday, they were hoping
to tap this provincial baseball hotbed as part of the club's continuing
efforts in sustaining adult baseball in the Philippines after yesteryear's
neglect in the grand old game.
The last thing they expected to do was win a game at the Barons' own backyard.
Nevertheless, this group of weekend warriors proved worthy of playing
in a ballfield where "one dared not to show his face unless he was
good enough to play".
Leslie Suntay's two-out two run single broke a seventh inning tie as the
Titans overcame losing a couple of five-run leads en route to scorching
the Sugar Barons 12-10 behind a 15-hit parade.
The Titans led 5-0 and 7-2 before the home team responded by giving Titans
reliever Nesty Leyson a rude welcome in lighting up the scoreboard for
8 runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-7 lead.
But Leyson would settle down to hurl zeroes the rest of the way, buying
his teammates time to stage a comeback.
Ericsson Bellosa opened the fifth with a double and scored off an errant
throw in the ensuing play. A pair of rbi-groundouts from Mike Pastores
and Nesty Leyson drew the Titans even in the sixth.
